Constantly fascinated by the world around me. I've got the dreamer's disease... and I believe that a truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

I spend most of my time reading, writing, cooking & planning my life on Post-It notes. Music, wine, food, art & travel are my favorite fuel; spending time well wasted.
I began writing this blog because I think that every day we have something to be celebrated, shared, something that sparks creativity, inspiration & ideation.
Although I'm quite optimistic, I'm more judgmental than I'd like to admit. Here's to overturning assumptions.

René of the Day // 12.4.11 // Pinterest Crafts

What was going to be a boring, rainy afternoon turned into a fun and crafty afternoon at my Haley's house. Her family was in town from Illinois and I'd had the pleasure of meeting them at her birthday party at Coney Island in the summer. She and her sister had chosen a few Christmas crafts from Pinterest and they invited me to join them.

First we made Christmas wine bottles - super simple and affordable. Soak the labels off empty wine bottles with hot, soapy water. Spray paint them white or silver. Allow to dry. Spray with adhesive. Roll in a cookie pan filled with epson salts. They sparkle! Stick festive floral arrangements or other decor inside.
[Note: they do tend to "shed" a lot, so place on a pretty tray or prepare to clean up some salt.]

Our other project was Starched String Ornaments - or string balls, you know, whatever. This was a bust (pun intended for the Beck girls but it worked for me!) Blow up a balloon and wrap string all around it... once it's densely covered, paint craft glue over the string until it's saturated. Hang dry then pop the balloon and pull out with a pair of tweezers. (I think because they were hung outside from the porch while it was raining they stayed moist. I took mine home and hung it over the tub then took a blow dryer to it for a few minutes.) It was a little lumpy on one side but depending on how it's hung, you can't see it.

This can also be a great idea for wedding decor and you can make them large enough to slip a light bulb inside for a pretty hanging lamp.

And to take a break from our busy projects, Haley's husband George made Skinny Taste zucchini enchiladas which are amazing!

Get the recipe here.
[Note: buy enchilada sauce in the can at the store. The time and effort aren't worth it - the can is super cheap and has the same ingredients.)

René of the Day // 10.27.11 // Ritz Pix Deal

This is an incredible deal so I had to share it! Ritz Camera has a special on digital photograph prints for only 6 cents each (for 3.5x5") on Tuesdays and Wednesday - can you beat that?!

Create a free account on their website and upload your photos and order them to be printed mid-week. It was so easy and the prints turned out great. Pick up was quick and simple and they were really nice (I went to the location in Kenwood on Montgomery Road - there's also one in Rookwood). I ordered over 70 prints for an album I created for MR and it cost less than $5.00. Keep this in mind for holiday gifting because it's a total steal. You're welcome! :)

Other print sizes range from 22-57 cents - still a bargain.

René of the Day // 10.6.11 // Pinning

I've played around a bit on Pinterest. It's easy to get lost in the endless inspiration and daydream over the gorgeous images and build your fairytale in boards. But I'm not yet addicted as some friends say they are and I've yet to find true value in the time spent playing around. Perhaps I need to spend more time digging deeper and pinning items I find on other sites. Another creative distraction is always welcome but to an extent I can't help but feel like I'm just dog-earring corners of magazine pages and wasting time - but it must be managed and my main focus has been my "Dream Home" board. As MR said the other week, "The studio is getting too small for the three of us, Fin." So in the meantime, when I have a few minutes to kill, I'll continue to search and ooh and awh at the endless fabulous photos on the site... But I wonder how often people take action on their pins - design a room based on your board, make a recipe you've liked or put together an outfit or bouquet arrangement that was found on the sight - it would be neat to see how many conversions came from this site.

René of the Day // 9.20.11 // Falloween

On a trip to Michael's craft store to inspire the fall decor for my adorable Willow House glass thimble domes that are the highlight of my kitchen table, I came across some fun Halloween items that I had to have! I spent Friday night relaxing, watching "Something Borrowed," eating English chocolate and dressing up the little scenes. Yes, I sound old and boring and lame but after endless weekends of travel, it was nice to relax at home. (Never thought I'd say that.)

One has sparkly little spiders with creepy long legs, one has two little jack-o-lanterns and a tiny black cat and one has little piles of skulls. I knew I wouldn't be able to use a whole bag of fake spider webs and I didn't have cotton balls so I pulled apart the ends of Q-Tips to improvise and line the bottoms of the domes - I think they turned out quite cute! And I have my fall set-up planned for November. Just call me Mini Martha. ;)

René of the Day // 6.28.11 // Smash

Super awesome gift I have to share - *Smash Journal. I received this for my birthday about a month or so ago and have been pondering the possibilities of what I can stick inside the pages of this incredibly fun, unique and convivial book. The pages vary with gorgeous and vintage-inspired images, practical spaces for to-do lists (hello, SO me!), spaces for photos, highlights of today, lists of "some kind of wonderful and crazy" things you've seen, experienced, tasted, heard or smelled... It's like a carbon copy of René of the Day!

I also received neat stickers to use that say things like "makes me happy" and "someday..." Again, so René. I'm so ruffled to start piecing together what to include on each of the pages. It would be a wonderful gift to fill the book with photos and mementos to give as a complete gift. I've torn out a pretty page with a big slice of pie that says "You're my sweetie..." for my latest post-weekend thank you note to MR. My mom and my aunt are very creative scrapbookers so it's neat that they found a way for me to do it with my own style. For now I'm literally smashing photos and things between the pages until I get the time to glue it all down and organize my thoughts.

*Smash has a blog with more products and ideas to check out: http://www.smashstoriesblog.com/

René of the Day // 5.31.11 // She's Crafty

You may have seen these posted on my Facebook or previous blog on Tumblr, "Small Girl: Big World" but I wanted them to be featured here because I enjoyed them today as I ate dinner at my kitchen table.

My mom hosted a Willow House party this spring and I fell in love with the little glass thimble dome set. They reminded me of "Alice in Wonderland" and I knew I could make a cute and whimsical little series to decorate my apartment for the coming months of sunshine!

I went to JoAnn Fabrics and purchased bright green moss balls, a little nest and eggs, a bird and a butterfly and also pulled from some loose moss I have in a hurricane from Pottery Barn on a bookcase. Below are photos of the completed work. It was fun to do something crafty (hopefully you can see this is a different manner of "crafty" than the Beastie Boys bump about) and they look lovely on my table.
