I spend most of my time reading, writing, cooking & planning my life on Post-It notes. Music, wine, food, art & travel are my favorite fuel; spending time well wasted.
I began writing this blog because I think that every day we have something to be celebrated, shared, something that sparks creativity, inspiration & ideation.

René of the Day // 12.3.11 // Aloha!

I’m just jealous. My parents and my niece are in Maui for the week. They’ve rented a condo at Maui Eldorado for a few years in a row and I’m hoping to go in the next few years. In high school I dreamt of going to the University of Hawaii and even ordered a sweatshirt.

The condo is on a golf course and has a full kitchen with granite counter tops, a private patio and a cabana on the beach with a web came so we can watch them play in the surf. There’s great snorkeling nearby and with a car rental, a decent drive to the craters and waterfalls. They took a boat cruise and Chip and Kylie took surfing lessons – cowabunga! They attended a traditional luau with a suckling pig and Kylie picked up the fallen plumerias from the bushes each day and they strung a lei with the sewing kit they packed – how fun! They said it smelled wonderful but unfortunately you can’t bring them back home.

Ky is such a lucky little girl to go on such an amazing trip at this age. I think she loved the adventures – Mom said she was a great traveler and she would choose her to go with her on the Amazing Race because she can bolt through an airport with a backpack and a rollercase like a pro! LOL Hopefully I can take her on a fabulous trip some day, too.

It sounds and looks like they had a wonderful Hawaiian Christmas holiday – mali kaliki maka! Here are some of my favorite photos from their trip:

René of the Day // 11.30.11 // The season in review

We celebrated the season for the I'd Hit That softball team at El Rancho Grande (AKA "The Big Nasty") and enjoyed margaritas, chips + salsa and queso sticks (served with ketchup - WTF?!) Of course, what's an event for our office without the commentary of our former "Two and a Half Men" copywriter??? I had to share his intro and my bio so I can capture it for always:

The year in review: copy-only collector's edition

How does one define "victory?" With "runs?" With frivolous little "points?" We often tell ourselves that the team that "scores the most" is the team that "wins" - but is this really the case? We of the 2011 I'd Hit That softball team think otherwise. We say that victory belongs to those who dominate in the fun department. And in this regard, we never knew defeat. Our roster included the following all-stars:

René "René Brunelle" Brunelle:
René was often seen wandering around in the outfield, leisurely weaving daisies into chains, or perusing magazines in search of the latest news on corn refiners. But this lackadaisical facade belied the heart of a ruthless competitor. When anything was hit in her direction, she'd strike like a deranged cobra before instantly returning to her private happy world.

I have to say, it made me giggle. I did not in fact futz around in the outfield - I was proud of some of the plays I made and enjoyed the comments on how fast my little legs ran to first base. It was a hell of a season - but I just realized, we didn't have a mascot....

René of the Day // 11.26.11 // Ky's Luau!

The adult's bar
We threw a luau party for Kylie's 8th birthday, in preparation for her trip to Maui with my parents in December! She had a great time with some of her friends from school and of course the adults enjoyed the festivities, as well. We all dressed in Hawaiian gear and enjoyed local fare - Mom made kalua pig (not the drink, it's a salty savory shredded pork dish). The hula girl cake was so adorable!

With her American Girl doll, Kanani
Birthday girl!
Mom made a hula girl cake!

René of the Day // 11.25.11 // A Great Day

Lunched at Senate with Mom + Kiki and did some shopping in OTR
(Poutine: fries, local cheese curds, braised shortribs + gravy - NOMS!)

North Carolina BBQ sandwich

Visited Spring Grove Cemetery and laid wreaths and Gigi's and grandpa's graves

Late afternoon cocktail on the rooftop at O'Bryon's, enjoying the balmy day with Kiki

Bowling at Star Lanes* in Newport with the Loveland gals
(*Loved this place! A smoke-free bowling alley? Finally! And their appetizers were above par, for sure.)

One word: poutine

René of the Day // 11.23.11 // T-Gives Eve

It's tradition! For at least the past three years, Becca and I go to R.P. McMurphy's on Thanksgiving Eve. Usually her favorite musician, Paul Otten, is playing. This year there was another band but we still came and invited more friends (Vale, Maura, Dave, Alex...) to join us. With our plastic green and pink Mug Night cups filled, we sang and had a great time, enjoying the friends for whom we're thankful. Cheers!

René of the Day // 11.20.11 // UT vs. Vandy

I’d had plans to stay in Cincinnati and go to a surprise birthday party this weekend. But Vale decided to take Maura to the Tennessee game so of course MR insisted that he brought me, too. We drove down Saturday morning in Vale’s big funeral home pick-up truck with his friends from work. We tailgated in our usual spot, the park on Lake Ave. Once we got to the game, the three couples spilt into different seats – it was the first time I sat in MR’s season ticket seats (see photos below).  They have an awesome view! Second row of second level, slightly to the left behind the goal post. It was the most fun UT game I’ve gone to…  Great view of the field and scoreboard.

At this game MR introduced me to Petro’s Chili & Chips (I’m still trying to figure out why he waited so long!) It’s a Tennessee tradition, with chili in a little bucket, topped with sour cream, onions, tomatoes, chili cheese, Fritos, olives, black beans and hot sauce – ah-maz-ing! Oh, and their hint of orange sweet tea is wonderful, too. (Even more wonderful when you dump airplane bottles of vodka in it, since SEC stadiums are dry and you start dragging ass at third quarter after tailing for four hours before the game. Oof.) MR had some chili and I had to taste it. Then later I got one – and he got another. Oy! (Or oink?) The game went into overtime so we went to sit with everyone else and it was unreal… a 90-yard interception return to touchdown in the last seconds of the game!!! We were all jumping up and down and yelling – so exciting! I know that a close victory over Vandy isn't anything to be overly proud of but it was still a fun game.

We went to Cool Beans after the game (of course) and MR met a UT alum who now plays for the Texans. After a few pitchers and catching up with their old college friends, we took a cab back to the hotel and passed out hard – very happy I decided to make the last minute trip to Knoxville.

René of the Day // 11.19.11 // Kylie's 8!

My Baby Binks is growing up… I remember babysitting her after school during my senior year. Being an aunt is one of my favorite parts of my life and I love watching her become a young lady. She loves to sing and dance and draw… Her questions make me laugh and it’s so interesting to listen to her vocabulary advance and her understandings of the world deepen. I’m so lucky to have her brightness in my life.

René of the Day // 11.8.11 // You're Gonna Miss This

In regard to my last post, I want to be sure I'm drinking in these moments and appreciating them before they fly by... Trace Adkins says it well.

René of the Day // 11.6.11 // A Scottish Wedding

Congratulations to my Scottish lassie, Pinzi Lou, who was married yesterday!!! What a beautiful bride she made. So sad to not have been in attendance but it just seems like yesterday we were giggling as we went to bed at Andi's house in England in August, discussing the potential of when her engagement would come. It all happened so fast! (Lyndsey "Pinzi" and I met the summer of 2007 when we were camp counselors in the woods of Connecticut. She rode all the way home to Cincinnati in my Civic at the end of our adventurous summer and was a wonderful friends as I arrived home to hear my grandmother had passed away the night before... And she came back to visit two years later with her lovely friend Jenna. Then she flew from Scotland to surprise me in England this summer!)

Cannot wait until I get to meet Mr. James Carter when they visit Cincinnati on their trip around the world next year, before moving to the oil town of Perth, Australia to settle. Now MR and I have one more reason to go down under (visit the east coast and the west with our friends in Byron Bay.) Ever so happy for this couple - very few people can make me laugh the way Pinzi can. James is a lucky lad - congrats!

How beautiful and traditional :)

René of the Day // 10.29.11 // Halloweeen Party!

BOO! Just kidding. We didn't dress as anything scary - just as awesome stuff. Like a Freudian Slip, an orange barrel, a Pinky Lady, the Black Swan... and MR. A pair of Depends should've been in order for the laughs we had that night. We tried to fit Maura in the back of the Yaris and the barrel pushed up and covered all but the top of her head with the headband fitted with the flashing orange light LOL Caution!

And Sanker dressed up as MR. He had texted me earlier in the day as I was taking a nap and I thought, "What the hell ever that means, I'll just see later - I'm not going to try to figure it out" and I rolled over. He showed up to Vale's house (note: Vale and MR were at a UT game in Knoxville) and we died... He was wearing khakis, boat shoes, a camo jacket, a Black n Mild, a Miller Lite in a coozie, and UT shirt and hat. Then he told me he needed me to "do his eyebrows." Bless it. I painted on thick bushy brows with Lindsey's eyeliner pencil - and he insisted on making them bigger. He posed for us downstairs and we cracked up... but something was missing. Sanker is a slim dude... MR has a big barrel chest. I made him stuff a pillow under the shirt. The girls thought it may be offensive but as soon as he did it, it became the best costume EVER! I was laughing so hard I was crying with tears rolling down my cheeks!!! When we got to Dave's party, the guys yelled, "ROBERS IS IN TOWN!!!" as they always do when MR visits - hilarious. And everyone who saw it on Facebook debated whether or not it was really him - HAHA! Twas a good night.

René of the Day // 10.28.11 // 52 Weeks of Mail

I can't recall how I came across this brilliant idea but I absolutely adore it. 52 Weeks of Mail encourages people to send a letter, card or piece of mail every week for 52 weeks. Staying in touch this way helps us to become more intentional about our relationships, and as I've mentioned before, everyone loves to receive something thoughtful in the mail. (Bills, move aside.) The project initially began on October 9 but I encourage y'all to begin with your Christmas cards - that's easy enough. Maybe split the bulk into groups for a few days to get into the habit of visiting the post box and go from there. Your next week could be thank you cards for holiday parties and/or gifts you received.

I've blogged about it before but I've fallen into the nearly 52-week plan by sending MR a card after every weekend we spend together to say thank you and capture the memories as our relationship grows 300 miles apart. I also love sending notes to say thank you for dinner parties and as a little hello to friends out of state (or the country, for that matter.) It's an easy and inexpensive way to make one's day and gives your own heart a little squeeze! (squeee)

An idea from 52 Weeks is to include a brand new card and envelope with a stamp to encourage the recipient to write back. You could foster a new pen pal relationship - my late grandmother and I did this and I really treasure those letters now. It enhanced our bond in a way I hadn't realized was possible.

So good luck! Send a photo, a long love letter or make a list of birthdays to send cards for. You'll be pleased with the response to your correspondence.

René of the Day // 10.27.11 // Ritz Pix Deal

This is an incredible deal so I had to share it! Ritz Camera has a special on digital photograph prints for only 6 cents each (for 3.5x5") on Tuesdays and Wednesday - can you beat that?!

Create a free account on their website and upload your photos and order them to be printed mid-week. It was so easy and the prints turned out great. Pick up was quick and simple and they were really nice (I went to the location in Kenwood on Montgomery Road - there's also one in Rookwood). I ordered over 70 prints for an album I created for MR and it cost less than $5.00. Keep this in mind for holiday gifting because it's a total steal. You're welcome! :)

Other print sizes range from 22-57 cents - still a bargain.

René of the Day // 10.16.11 // Blooms + Berries

Going to the "pumpkin patch" is one of my favorite fall festivities! I have memories of going as many years back as I can remember... My mom and aunt would plop us on piles of plump orange gourds and snap our photos as we rolled off and petted goats and ran around with burrs grabbing onto our white rolled-down socks. As I've gotten older, I love taking my niece and seeing her doing the same things. Although we go to a different farm now, it's still a special tradition. It's so funny how three years ago we were sweating in summer clothes and the following year we were bundled up for the winter. Ohh, midwest weather, how you surprise us.

Blooms and Berries in Loveland hosts Fall of the Farm and is a wonderful experience for kids of any age... They have a massive corn maze (Kylie called it a "corn puzzle" a few years ago) that we get lost in. There's a hayride, a gorgeous field of sunflowers and tons of free as well as inexpensive activities and games for children. This year MR joined us and we had a so much fun... He didn't think my pumpkin was pretty - he called it "weird" - but I think it's very "Martha Stewart," and he bought it for me anyway :) I've suggested B&B to numerous friends, co-workers and others, especially people who Cincinnati transplants, and everyone seems to love it!
My jack-o-lantern and the "Martha" pumpkin

The best photo of the day!

René of the Day // 10.13-15.11 // RT+KP=RKT

I love the hot Tomalia's!
The girls
Or something like that... What I can tell you it does equal is a wonderful love story. Three years ago one of my best friends, Kristin (KP) was living in Jacksonville, Florida, sick of the "scene" and enjoying some wine after a long Monday. She saw a commercial from Match.com and with the courage of her wine glass, decided to give it a shot. A handsome gentleman named Mr. René (RT) (yes, I am officially Miss René) from Michigan made a similar choice. They chatted... they dated... I'm abbreviating this story but they moved to Cincinnati and were engaged months later on the night of her birthday. As I sat at the bar waiting for them, an hour past their due, I caught on to the surprise. We enjoyed a bottle of champagne and celebrated. I was honored to be René #2 in their wedding. And seriously, I was so anti-online dating but look at these two. I mean, they're models. Alas, even hot, uncreepy cool people meet on the interwebs.
--

Since many of the wedding guests were visiting from out of town, we held Kristin's bachelorette party the Thursday night before the wedding weekend. We reserved the private dining room upstairs at Via Vite and stocked the girl's place setting with little candies that said "Mint to Be," tissues with a monogrammed "T" and penis straws that Miss Kristin (yes MOH has same name as bride, do we sense a trend?) and I trekked around town to 4 stores to find, including The Party Source, Hustler Hollywood, Party City and the gold mine - Spencer's Gifts. Had a great time planning the party with her (hello, Sundays at Coffee Emporium and Cafe De Wheels burger truck with bloody marys at Dutch's.) After a deliciously stuffing dinner of authentic Italian pizzas and great wine, we went to Scene Ultra Lounge for a free bottle of bubbles and played a hilarious card game that's similar to Never Have I Ever. We followed with another complimentary bottle of champagne at the new(ish) Luxe and then to Bartini for dancing with British men on a business trip - successful weeknight bachelorette party in Cincy!

The rehearsal and subsequent dinner the following night were wonderful. The Peaks are phenomenal entertainers - Kris' mom specifically designed the house for entertaining with the architect when the moved to Cincinnati from Miami, Florida in the early 90s. We enjoyed the food, company and beverages, including the fabulous apple cinnamon-infused vodka Mr. René homemade and adapted from the Bee Knees martini recipe from Bonefish Grill.

The wedding day was absolutely beautiful - an early October Saturday with bright skies and a slight breeze. We had a fantastic time getting ready with the girls and I took a video opening her lovely gifts from Mr. René. We watched "Father of the Bride" (her fav) as we waited at the church and took photos in the gorgeous garden courtyard at the church. The ceremony was lovely - Bruce was a fantastic priest and he made it fun and engaging.

The reception was an absolutely ball - wonderful food, an open bar and a great DJ - evidently MR asked them how much cash it would take to keep them going until midnight - $600 was a little high for his bid. And I loved how they had the cake toppers from both of their parents weddings on the table with their cake. It was a nice I'd love to live over again!

Congrats to you, Mr. & Mrs T - on your marriage, your new place and new jobs in Indy - can't wait to visit! Thank you for including me in your special day - it truly was perfect. I love you! xoxo

René of the Day // 10.8.11 // Camp Champs

Early autumn is the perfect time to trek it to the woods with friends for fun around the fire, warm boozy beverages and becoming one with nature, peeing amongst the trees. As I've said before, MR' high school pals are such a great group of people and they always invite me to join in their adventures, especially on weekends like this when I haven't seen him for a month - it's nice to be with other people who miss him and get it, too.

On Saturday afternoon we drove about 45 minutes northwest to Hueston Woods State Park, right past Miami University in Oxford. Gorgeous day - turning leaves and cool breeze, sunshine. We set up our site, had a beer or two and headed to the beach on the lake for some sand volleyball. The water was blue, the leaves were all changing colors across the way and sailboats were out... very picturesque - too bad I left my iPhone in the car! After an hour of intense competition and dancing in the sand to Angie's portland iPod speakers, we headed back to the campsite to grub. I hadn't camped there since my freshman year of high school and the site was quite different than I recalled. I sort of felt like we were in a trailer park... gobs of children, RVs, loose dogs and camo-clad adults, each site just 20 feet from the next, with cars lined up inbetween. So much for the quiet, great outdoors! (Note: I would highly recommend the drive to Athens to camp at Hocking Hills. You do have to hike your stuff a long way from the car to the site but it's much more secluded.) We really made the most of it... The boys bought weinie roasting sticks - so much better than an untrusty long twig dug up from under a log. We also had loads of snacks, coolers of beer, cider to heat over the fire and Knob Creek to make it all feel alright.

The boys started playing French Darts and most of us girls decided to take a walk in the dark to the "Haunted Trail." We never made it there... As we climbed the hill, we came to an RV park decorated like the Nightmare Before Christmas - for reals. It was like The Griswold's haunted hood. And there was a big shelter with great music blaring - so we put down our drinks and went to explore. We entered a massive family fun party with a hell of a DJ. Naturally, we joined the dance party and stayed for an hour, dancing with kids and going wild, having a great time. Everyone back at camp didn't know what they were missing!! There were two people dressed like... well, either swamp things, Captain Caveman or Cousin Its - literally, just furry creatures head to toe with nothing showing - ahh! Afterwards we walked past the haunted scenes and I SCREAMED when a witch figure started talking to me - then I turned and saw a man with a microphone and remote control - yikes - these people are intense about their holiday decor. And then most importantly, we found a toilet with a flusher.

When we returned to the camp site, not to anyone's surprise, there had been an accident with the boys. Dave is the most accident-prone person I've ever met. While playing French Darts, Sanker's frisbee hit Dave's pole which is good - except the glass Corona bottle came crashing down right into his mouth, busting open his lip and knocking out his front tooth. He looked like he got jumped. This is why we girls can't leave the scene ha. The rest of the night was long, fun, safe and the weather was wonderful. We heated the cider over the fire, chatted and had some interesting conversations between trips to the woods.

The next morning we gorged ourselves at Bob Evans and spent the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing. Fabulous weekend, if you ask me.

René of the Day // 10.4.11 // Prayers

Sending out thoughts, prayers and wishes to a close friend and her family who have experienced a tremendous loss. Her brother took his life this week and after speaking with her in depth about the situation, my heart is lightened for the family as they mourn the loss. He was an unbelievable musician, one of the most kind hearted young men I've known. I'll always have sympathy for the grief he dealt with and struggled with and how those of us who are not experiencing anxiety or depression can't clearly relate to how - regardless of one's general quality of life - it can reach beyond one's control. My wish is that they stay strong, can lean into God to receive His strength and continue to live their lives in his honor - which I believe they're doing a spectacular job of achieving. How lucky they were and he was to have each other. God bless MS, his family and friends. Peace be with you.

René of the Day // 9.24.11 // Gators vs. Wildcats

For my dad's 60th birthday and Father's Day this year, I surprised him with tickets to the Florida Gators versus Kentucky Wildcats football game in Lexington. He grew up in Gainesville, Florida and has been a diehard Gator fan since he was a kid. I don't believe he's been to a game since he moved to Cincinnati when he was 17 and I knew he'd be thrilled... We've anticipated the day since the early summer and I was so excited to take him. I really enjoyed riding down together, catching up, laughing and realizing we have the same favorite current country songs in common ("You and Tequila Make Me Crazy" and "Dirt Road Anthem") - I thought he still listened to classic rock all the time. But he's a good ole Southern boy so no surprise really. We had an early dinner at Pazzo's in Lexington, a pizza place a friend who's a UK alum recommended. We sat right in front of a 70" TV and watched the Alabama/Arkansas game which was great. The pizza was delicious but the wait was ridiculously long, considering they weren't slammed. But we did have some time to kill. But the ole boy wanted to get into that stadium to watch the Gators run out, even if we just sat and watched cheerleaders for a half hour til they were ready (okay, Dad, I get it, you're not dead.)

After dinner we drove to campus and searched for parking... He sure as hell wasn't about to pay $40 to park at a fraternity so we pulled down a residential street and a bunch of college kids were tailgating in their front yard and had a handwritten sign in the driveway: "$20: Spot and a Shot." DONE. Dad worried the kids would screw with his car since we were Gators fans but I told him we'd be good. A super nice kid helped us out and three of them offered us a drink as we walked from behind the house. They were clearly making bank on this parking situation so handing out a cheap drink to their customers was a great sell. Dad asked him if he was in business school and he said, "Yes sir." Dad replied, "Alright then good, because that's where you belong." I pulled out my Gators coozie, slipped it over the Bud Light a random girl handed me and we walked just down the street, over a little bridge and through the parking lot tailGATORs to the stadium. Granted, we sat damn close to the top but he was happier than a pig in sh-t. We had a great time watching Florida kill it. Their running back/track star Rainey is just impossible to catch. There was a group of six young dads behind us with their sons at their first UK game - they were super cute and entertaining throughout the game. Dad knows the game really well so it was enjoyable to talk through the plays and see how pumped he got. At halftime he grabbed us drinks and came back with two blue Powerades (of course, Wildcat Country.) He said a guy looked at him and said, "Shouldn't you be drinking Gatorade?" and he said "Y'all don't have any!" and he replied "That's how we do it." He got a kick out of that.

I was laughing all night because Dad and MR were going back and forth via my texts. Dad asked how he took Florida beating Tennessee the week before. I told him I didn't talk much smack. He goes, "I would've. I'd call him and say, 'This is your future father-in-law. CHOMP! CHOMP! CHOMP!" LOL Later he said, "At least one of the son-in-laws likes football." Then MR text me to say he was dressing up as the Tennessee Tech University golden eagle at halftime. Pepsi put on a big tailgate for their employees and their colleagues at Tech have been teasing him to do it for quite a while - thought that night would be good to show off for the employee's kids. Dad said, "Yeah right, golden eagle? It's probably a vulture costume." Ha. He said he shook his tail feather, posed for pictures, hugged randoms, cheered with the cheerleaders and took a knee for an injured player. He's a total ham so I know he loved it. They told him he can come back to do it anytime haha!

The Gators killed it and I'm so glad I decided to buy those tickets and take a day trip together. A few days later I called Dad to chat and asked if he had a good time. He said, "Honey, it was one of the best times I've had." That statement makes it all worth it. Go Gators!

René of the Day // 9.19.11 // Aunt Né Days

We need more of these... But between work and other commitments and my sister's plans, it does make Aunt Né Days with my 7 (almost 8) year old niece, Kylie, less frequent as I'd love for them to be. But we have a great time together. I mean, I'm a goof ball, she's practically as tall as me but I have a bank account and a car "that's Kylie-sized" - what's not for her to love? We plan little adventures like the Cincinnati Children's Museum or a day on "Kids Row" in Oakley - reading books and having lunch at Blue Manatee DeCafé, going crazy with the toys at King Arthurs Court Toy Store and rounding out the day with ice cream in a special silver bowl on a pink stool at Agalamesis Brothers. It's been amazing to watch her grown up from when she was born my senior year of high school. She's so bright, energetic and so damn cute - but hey, what aunt wouldn't say such things about their sibling's offspring?

Our latest Aunt Né Day included "The Lion King" in 3D - which I hear is only in theaters for 2 weeks! - followed up hanging out at Grandmommy's. I blew bubbles in the yard while she pretended to be a "quarterback" and ran and popped them. Then Grandmommy cooked pulled pork with pineapple BBQ sauce and homemade cole slaw and mashed potatoes with olives and some delicious horseradish cheddar cheese. And later I made ice cream cones to eat in the backyard. I was also able to catch up on some laundry! It was a perfect Aunt Né Day - I'm trying to think about our next, perhaps making them a regularly scheduled date. I'd love to take her for a more grown-up outing like getting a mani/pedi or have her spend the night at the studio with me and her best buddy, Findlay. I'm blessed to have such a little sweetheart as my sidekick.

Check out our sweet 3D shades!

René of the Day // 9.18.11 // Restaurant Week @ Bouquet

Bouquet Restaurant and Wine Bar is located in Covington, Kentucky, part of MainStrasse Village. It's been on "my list" for years and when Becca and I were deciding where to go for Greater Cincinnati Independents Restaurant Week, it was one of my top choices.

The Restaurant Week menu - 3 courses for $26.11 - wasn't as appealing to me as some of the selections from their man menu. Becca really enjoyed the butternut squash soup, heirloom salad and Atlantic salmon. I decided to forego the deal and choose what sounded best. I started with the smoked salmon mousse, served with cucumber, pickled ginger, red onion, candied orange zest and lemon caper aioli (see photo below). I was surprised to see the mousse served in little tarts but it was fantastic - the crust was rich and buttery and not too flaky. I would love to try another dish in a larger shell made with this dough. For the main course I had game hen with roasted brussels sprouts, blackberries, bacon and smoked buttermilk grits. It was outstanding! It was plated with four meaty little winglets stacked on top of one another, atop the delicious medley listed. The brussels sprouts were crunchy and roasted, the bacon was in thick, juicy little hunks and the grits provided the perfect creamy texture. My only qualm was that the blackberry seeds kept finding their way between my teeth, but what can you do? Our server was wonderful - I'm looking forward to going back with my mom and Kiki - we've talked about going for a long time - or for a romantic date with MR - he thought the hen sounded great. It's a very small and intimate space, so reservations are certainly recommended, I'm glad we had one. It was a full house at 8pm on Saturday. Next time I'd like to tap into their wine list, too.

After dinner we went to Oktoberfest Zinzinnati to meet up with friends and it was an absolute cluster! Phone service was spotty and it was nearly impossible to find anyone. I have never seen the festival so packed - it made it hard to enjoy the evening. The weather that afternoon was beautiful so perhaps that would've been a better time to go. It was just a crowd of drunk fools and far too many insulting smells in every direction. I also hate to see how people trash our city - but I also didn't see many garbage cans at our disposal (literally.) We each had one Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer and chatted a bit then headed home. I'll need to re-think my visit to Oktoberfest next year because I just can't be bothered with that circus again.

Side story: Bouquet also holds a special spot in my memory because last May, Kristin and I went to MaiFest in MainStrasse one Saturday and decided to sit down with our Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ales at a little table right in front of Bouquet. We were chatting about how I'd been a single gal since college and Kristin gave me a great girl talk about how I'm too quick to judge and should give guys the benefit of the doubt and not be so skeptical. I took her advice and tucked it in my back pocket when she dropped me off in Mt. Adams to meet up with Lindsey & Maura an hour or so later. So when we left Monk's Cove and sat down at a table at Tavern on the Hill, the only open seat was across from the girls, next to a guy with a huge smile and a big laugh who started talking about the Vols - so I turned around and gave him - MR! - a big Gator chomp... I gave him a chance, just like Kristin said, and the rest is history :)
